Billikens for Clean Water

In January 2019, Billikens for Clean Water will be returning to San Lucas, Belize, to partner with community leaders on a project to provide clean drinking water to every family that lives there. We need to raise $7,500 to purchase 25 LifeStraw Community Filters, and we need you to make that possible!

Our Partner Community

San Lucas is a small, Mayan community of 25 families in the southern region of Belize. While they live right next to a stream, the water is full of bacteria that can be harmful to their health. They have a well in their community, but it only provides a few gallons of water per day and is often contaminated. They do not have a good source of consistent, clean drinking water. The local government is installing community-wide drinking water systems one community at a time, but may not get to San Lucas for 3 to 5 years. Until then, the people in San Lucas need a way to access clean drinking water to keep their families healthy.

Our Project

Billikens for Clean Water has partnered with the leaders and local Water Committee in San Lucas to provide a short-term solution for their community. On our January trip, it is our goal to be able to provide every household with at least one LifeStraw Community Filter. This will allow everyone in San Lucas to have consistent access to healthy drinking water.

Each LifeStraw Community Filter will cost us $300 to purchase and ship to Belize. The filters will last 3-6 years, providing a viable short-term solution for household drinking water until the community receives its own, full-scale distribution system from the government. Learn more about the filters on the LifeStraw website.

This project will have lasting effects for San Lucas, the Toledo district as a whole, the Ministry of Rural Development, Jesuits of Belize, Billikens for Clean Water, Saint Louis University, and each individual we come in contact with. Our members are truly men and women for and with others as we encounter different regions and different communities throughout Belize. We are focused on creating meaningful relationships and conducting honest work. We believe water is a right and not a privilege to humanity, and we will continue to serve those who do not have access to clean safe drinking water.

Please help us meet our goal of $7,500 so we can provide clean drinking water to those in need. Make your gift today and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Thank you!
