John Berry Meachum Scholarship

Founded by Dr. Duane Moore, a 2002 graduate of the School of Medicine and a SLUCare physician at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and his wife, Katrina Thompson Moore, Ph.D., of SLU’s history department, this scholarship is named in honor of the achievements of John Berry Meachum (1789-1854) a pastor, businessman, educator, and founder of the oldest black church in Missouri. John Berry Meachum dedicated his life to the pursuit of educational opportunities for Black people. From his humble beginnings, he knew firsthand the sacrifices that medical students make to attend a competitive medical school and how challenging it is for economically disadvantaged medical students.

The Drs. Moore established this scholarship in his honor to provide access for students who would not otherwise be able to continue their studies. The John Berry Meachum Scholarship makes a profound impact on the lives of underrepresented minority students studying at the School of Medicine.
